Happy Drupal 5.0 beta 1

Glad to see that drupal 5.0 beta 1 came out last week. This should mean that we get to upgrade all of the moraca.org sites some time soon... Oh boy what fun... bet I stop using some contrib modules ...

Showing pictures is still not "good" for me in drupal. I am going to try the book module as a gallery... maybe that will be OK...

I would like to hear your ideas about what constitutes a good gallery module, and comments why current Drupal gallery modules are not enough. I ask this cause I want to build an open source Drupal module and would like to make something that everyone can find useful.

A good gallery should:

  1. be integrated into drupal
  2. allow "batch" add - read from a directory
  3. create different sizes
  4. have a thumbnail view with pages..
  5. include next & previous for full size
  6. minimize non-picture real estate on the screen - I want to see the full picture without scrolling
  7. I think each image should be a node - maybe just the "full size" not the thumbnail or original size
  8. Very easy to theme

Not really in any order but ...

2 may not be important if the workflow to upload and add a title and caption / description is "easy" -- but it most likely makes 3 easier - I would want the same sizes created for each picture in a specific album

I think 5 is very important and I prefer a small next / previous link or icon and not bigger thumbnails - they take away from the full size view.

I also want the navigation at the top and bottom

I think image module and its associates is getting there. Acidfree is pretty close but very "version" specific - in other words it doesn't always work for me ...
