Visual Studio Code

This is the code editor of choice for me and it seems most of the coding channels on YouTube. It really is good. Very full featured with its extension library you can get support for just about any programming language or framework. I am using it to build this blog post. It is not great for that as it is not WYSIWYG but I just today looked for and found a spell checking plugin that works well so I am happy.

I have used VS Code for Python, PHP, JS, HTML, CSS and markdown. While I am a very amateur level coder I find VS Code to be a pleasure to use compared to IDEs / Editors I have used over the years. It is very light weight feeling compared to some (on the other hand I have a pretty beefy laptop now) I have used.

I also works perfectly editing “remote” code - it is a windows program that has no problem editing code in my WSL / linux partition. I understand it works ove SSH connections and inside Docker containers but I have yet to test that.
